this afternoon i went to see a movie, 'yellow rose', in inver grove heights. i lucked out on hearing about it as i was checking times online for another movie when i found it. this movie is about a young filipina that is interested in being a country singer. i learned something from watching the movie, as the song 'crazy' was in it but it didn't sound like patsy cline. the closing credits said the version used was by loretta lynn. when i got home i found this version on youtube, guess it was from a tribute album to patsy in 1977. there is name-checking of willie nelson, and johnny cash, in it as well. dale watson, a country singer i hadn't heard of, plays himself in it. one memorable thing i saw in the background of one scene was, for lack of a better term, 'candles in glass' and two musicians were on them- prince, and dolly parton. the movie does depict immigration raids, and the main character's mom is deported to manila. most of the movie takes place in austin, texas, and not much of it in manila. the movie does remind me a little of 'star is born' as the main character is talented but hesitates at first on performing. but there is no movie if she doesn't! in the end it reminded me of 'wild rose' more, another recent country music movie, although the other 'rose' takes place in nashville. and the movie reminds me of how i would like to visit texas, not only to see austin, and san antonio, but also having a writer friend in houston. i moved up my walk around the neighborhood in order to see the movie and found 6 cents. just before midday i went to a catholic church and got some take-out booya soup, a pint. the priest noticed me taking a picture of a sign and asked why, i said i was documenting history as we are living in the time of a pandemic. i watched some of the pro football games today, first half of vikings-falcons, the vikings lost. when i got back from the walk there was bonus coverage of bears-panthers, bears won and are now 5-1. in the evening, after the movie, i watched the baseball playoff game on fox, dodgers-braves. it was game 7 and the dodgers won 4-3 to take the series 4-3. just saw online tonight how iowa wrestling coach dan gable will be receiving the president's medal of freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.
