this morning i watched a DVD movie, a purchase i made a while back, 'newton boys'. i recall seeing it at the theater back in 1998. i left iowa for suburban chicago about a month later. i recognized many of the actors in it, including matt mc conaughey, dwight yoakam, julianna margulies, and ethan hawke. as a baseball fan of course i liked the scene where baseball players are named- rube waddell, tris speaker, rogers hornsby, and ty cobb. in the closing credits i liked seeing the interview with the youngest member of the newton boys, joe, on johnny carson back in 1980. the movie was 2 hours, but it held my attention. i noticed some things that i hadn't before, which is typical when watching movies again for the first time in a while. when one of them was arrested, jess, it was by texas ranger frank hamer, who was also involved in the bonnie and clyde saga. although research states it was actually frank's brother that arrested jess. but i am aware of how a movie like this has a disclaimer saying 'some scenes and characters were invented for dramatic effect'. it was funny at one point when one lawman called these bank robbers 'please and thank you country boys'.
i watched some of the pro football games, but not a lot. vikings rallied to beat the carolina panthers 28-27, and i was out walking for a while after it. during the walk i found 58 cents. i will likely avoid getting snack foods out of the vending machine at work for a while so i have enough for beer for christmas dinner. i prefer being able to pay cash, that is. and it doesn't take all that many quarters to get a can of hamm's when i got one for thanksgiving for $2. i tried listening to the bears-packers game on the radio in the evening but fell asleep, bears lost their 5th straight game.
